Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
